ABOUT

My creative practice lies at the intersection of expressive art and design. I construe design as the practice of incarnation : the intentional process through which an abstract concept acquires material existence. This view allows design to extend beyond profitability and utility, and to engage with a broader field of ideas, as was the case in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It also means that a single work can be both a designed object and an expressive artwork. Expression and incarnation are not mutually exclusive: a work that expresses a theme can also serve as a medium through which that theme (or a different one) is materialized.

My own work illustrates this intersection. I explore the expressive and incarnational power of both form and material. Many of my projects contain expressive elements that represent, symbolize, or allude to various themes. At the same time, I consider the intrinsic properties of these elements and their effects on users, making an effort to participate in and recover the historical lineage of design practice as incarnation. In this way, my work moves between expressive art and design.
